The Cost of Stucco

Choosing the right material for your home may be a difficult choice. There are a lot of factors to consider such as time, installation process, durability, cost of maintenance, curb appeal, property value, and cost. On top of that, your options including wood, brick, vinyl, concrete, stone, and stucco can feel limitless.

One of the most popular choices for home builders in Nevada, due to the warm and dry weather, is stucco. Stucco is a great building material for these climates. It is easy to work with, extremely durable, and a great insulator against the heat. Not only does it stand the test of time in the Nevada weather, but it is extremely versatile. Stucco allows you to achieve your desired exterior look simply through the use of color and application. However, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how great of an option something is if it is unaffordable.

How Much Does Stucco Cost?

There are several factors that determine how much stucco installation costs.

The average cost of stucco installation is $7-$9 per square foot. This takes into account both the cost of the building materials, ranging from $5 – $6 per square foot, as well as the cost of labor, ranging from $2-$3 per square foot. To look at this from a bigger picture, we can look at the average cost for each home “size”:

  • A 1,000 square foot home would cost about $6,000 to $9,000.
  • A 1,500 square foot home would cost about $8,000 to $11,100.
  • A 3,000 square foot home would cost $15,990 to $25,800.

While these are the most obvious costs, there might be additional factors that could change the price including:

  • Paint or color
  • Stucco repair or removal
  • Timeline constraints or expedited timeline
  • Structural repairs

How Does Stucco Compare in Cost to Other Options?

You can’t just look at stucco prices within a sillo though. When it comes to building materials, you need to compare costs. How does it compare in price to other materials? We know it looks appealing and is durable, but what are the costs of other materials?

The cost of stucco per square foot is similar to other options. As mentioned previously, for the materials only, it costs about $5-$6 and lasts anywhere from 50 – 80 years. Here are some comparisons:

  • Stone – Stone is on the higher end with an average cost of $10-$45 per square foot, for materials alone. A positive for stone is that it lasts 60-70 years. It requires maintenance, a new layer of sealer, every 5 years or so.
  • Wood – Wood averages about $2-$6 per square foot, which is fairly similar to stucco. However, wood siding only lasts about 20 – 40 years. Wood also needs a lot more maintenance than stucco requires.
  • Vinyl –  Vinyl is similar to wood in cost, about $4- $5 per square foot, but only lasts 20 – 40 years. Vinyl requires a simple maintenance of cleaning, typically twice a year.
  • Brick costs about $2-$6 per square foot and lasts about 100 years. Brick basically needs no maintenance.

Overall, there is a lot to consider. It may not be the smartest option to pick the cheapest material if it needs to be replaced more frequently, compared to another option that may be a few dollars more expensive initially but will last 3x the amount of time.

What is the Cost of Maintaining Your Stucco?

Stucco requires very little maintenance and is expected to last decades without the need for repairs or replacements.

In the case that repairs are required, the estimated cost depends on the size of the repairs needed. Including labor, material, and any other potential costs, stucco repair costs an average of about $30-$50 per hour. Most small repairs only require about 1-5 hours of work, while larger repairs or replacements could take up to 20 hours. If you are needing repairs, it is always good to get a few quotes from stucco repair companies near you.

How Does Stucco Affect the Property Value?

Stucco is known to increase the property value because not only is it low maintenance, it is also visually appealing and adds a higher curb appeal. On average, homes with a stucco exterior are more likely to sell for over the median price compared to others in the surrounding areas. This is attributed to the fact that homes with a stucco exterior are seen as well-maintained. So overall, it does affect the property value of your home.
